DIMAPUR — Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Wangpang Konyak secured victory by a margin of 5,333 votes over the Congress nominee Wanglem Konyak in the by-election for the 43-Tapi Assembly constituency.

A total of 14,818 voters cast their votes in the by-election, out of which Wangpang Konyak secured 10,053 votes, while Wanglem Konyak garners a total of 4,720 votes and 45 votes were cast as NOTA (none of the above).

The by-election for the 43-Tapi Assembly Constituency in Mon district took place on November 7 across 23 polling stations spanning five sectors and a remarkable 96 percent voter turnout was recorded, while the counting of votes commenced at 8 am on Sunday, December 3.

The by-election was prompted by the unfortunate passing of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) MLA and advisor of Social Welfare department, Noke Wangnao, on August 28 and subsequently, on October 17, the ruling NDPP party officially declared Wangpang Konyak as its candidate for the Tapi assembly seat by-election in Mon district, at the party headquarters in Chümoukedima.

The 39 year-old Wangpang Konyak is a former government servant who was a superintendent in the Directorate of New Renewable Energy and also served as a former aide to the late Wangnao.

While Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also took to X and congratulate the win by saying “Heartiest congratulations to Mr. Wangpang Konyak, @NDPPofficial candidate on winning the by-election for 43-Tapi A/C. I wish him the best in serving his constituents and the people of Nagaland. I also congratulate the Party workers and well-wishers,” .
