Kohima, May 29 (EMN):
Naga Task Force Bengaluru for Covid-19 has provided shelter to stranded people in Karnataka, who were rendered homeless following deferment of the state-arranged special train.

The special train was scheduled to leave for Dimapur on May 28 from Bengaluru with 1600 stranded citizens of Nagaland, who were stranded in Karnataka due to the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Hundreds of people packed up and left their homes and proceeded to Bengaluru a day ahead of the much-awaited journey on Thursday, which left many homeless.

In the midst of such dilemma, the task force members have shouldered the responsibility in arranging accommodations to the stranded people who arrived at the city. Till now, the task force members have accommodated about two hundred homeless people.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, Manpa Konyak, member of Naga task force, informed that they have sheltered homeless people at different places in Bengaluru. He shared that the task force members have booked some rented houses to accommodate people on payment basis. He added that the members of the task force team are also sheltering some people in their own houses.

While some good Samaritans have also provided free accommodation, there are some tribal units who are also housing some stranded people. Catholic institutions are also accommodating them at some other places.

Meanwhile, Konyak also expressed concern that over three hundred people will be vacating their rented accommodation on or before May 31. Owing to the announcement of the special train by the government of Nagaland and their financial crisis, many had decided to leave their places.

The task force members have taken to the streets to find more accommodations for those who are vacating their homes in the city. Konyak said that the Bishop of Karnataka has arranged some Catholic institutions.
Mughato Kiba, convener of the task force, said that the shelter homes provided by the Karnataka government is filled up with different communities. He added that some stranded people are also staying in the government shelter homes.

“However, considering safety as the first priority, the task force is trying to find other houses on paid basis to accommodate Nagaland citizens with the aid of INR 3,00,000 sanctioned by the government of Nagaland as a relief,” Kiba informed.

There are over 3,800 stranded people who have registered to come home from Karnataka.
