DIMAPUR — Following the May 25 gruesome incident in Tizit where Ahoa Konyak, ‘Action chairman’ of the Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU), was hacked to death by an alleged drug dealer, the menace of drug abuse has become a hot topic of discussion in Mon district though it is not a new issue.

With an aim to send a strong message on ‘War against drugs’, peace rallies here held across Mon district on June 1 through the initiative of the Konyak Students’ Union (KSU).

While the path to war against drugs is challenging, this time, the district is on a resolute mission to stop the menace. In 2019, the Konyak frontal organisations under the banner of Konyak Union (KU) had made a clarion call to declare “war against drug abuse.” Since then, the war against drugs has been consistently followed in the district, a former TASU leader told Eastern Mirror.

Various student organisations under Mon district have also adopted new resolutions besides reaffirming previous declarations on drugs.

The Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) has resolved to conduct raid on any suspected houses or persons, including family members of alleged drug dealers, within its jurisdiction including Naginimora town.

“An operation depending on the situation will be instigated by the union at the residence of peddlers,” said WASU president Temwang Konyak.

The union has asked all individuals from Wakching area who are involved in drug-related activities and serving in the KU, KNSK, village councils, village development boards, village education committee/school management committees and student bodies, to tender their resignations from their respective positions by June 6.

Further, WASU directed the family members of drug users to send them to detoxification camp/centre. In case the addicts relapse, the union said it would initiate further course of action.

“Also with regard to the call on war against drug, any individual/family involving in drugs/opium-related issues are warned to bring to a close the prohibited activities on or before June 6, 2023,  failing which WASU will castigate the individual/family who fails to abide by the law,” said the WASU president.
