DIMAPUR — In a tragic incident, the ‘Action Chairman’ of the Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU), Ahoa Konyak, was hacked to death by a suspected drug dealer in Tizit town on Thursday morning.

When contacted, TASU general secretary Nokmao Konyak informed Eastern Mirror that the tragedy occurred when the TASU team was conducting a check on anti-social elements in Tizit area on Thursday morning.

During the checking, the team led by Ahoa Konyak, the ‘Action Chairman’ seized ‘sunflower drugs’ from some people, Nokmao said.

Thereafter, a five-member TASU team went to the house of one of the accused to inquire about the drugs. However, when they questioned the accused about the drugs, the latter became enraged and picked up a machete and attacked Ahoa Konyak, killing him on the spot, while the other team members fled for safety.

The student leader clarified that they went into the house of the accused after getting information about the housed of alleged drug dealers. He also claimed that TASU members recovered some drugs from the house of the accused.

Officer in-charge of Tizit Police station, Enzambemo, told Eastern Mirror that the accused has already been arrested and presently under police custody in Mon town.

On receiving information about the incident, police along with TASU members went to the house of the accused and retrieved the body of the deceased, which was handed over to family members, he said.

The police officer also informed that following the killing incident, there was initially a lot of commotion and some individuals set fire of the house of the accused.

However, the situation has been brought under control, he said and added investigations are on to ascertain the exact facts of the incident.

Meanwhile, sources said that the funeral of late Ahoa Konyak will be held on Friday at Tizit local ground.

TASU has also called for a 24-hour shutter-down within Tizit Jurisdiction with effect from Thursday, to mourn the brutal killing of Ahoa Konyak. Informing that the shutter-down was imposed for the “safety of the general public,” the union requested shopkeepers and public to extend cooperation.
