Mokokchung witnesses maiden Naga wrestling competition
KOHIMA — Coinciding with the Moatsü festival, Naga wrestling was introduced for the first time in Mokokchung district at Saringyim village on May 1.
Initiated by four persons – Keduovilie Zumu (guest mentor), Keneiselie Khawakhrie (coach), Medosalie Zumu (assistant coach) and Yimkumsashi Pongen (event manager), the wrestling competition was held after the participants were given coaching for two days.
Supported by the Naga Wrestling Association, the event was organised to promote Naga wrestling in the Ao area and to the other non-wrestling tribes of Nagaland.
A total of nine wrestlers participated in the competition. Toshimanen, Akumtoshi and Imtinenba won the first, second and third positions respectively. The position holders were awarded cash prizes.
