Mhasilhousie Nagi wins Wayo wrestling championship

Mhasilhousie Nagi from Jotsoma village retained his championship title for the third time after defeating Kevizhakho Suokhrie in the finals of 58th Western Angami Youth Association (Wayo) sports meet wrestling (senior category) on Tuesday evening at Khuochiezie in Kohima.

Nagi grappled Suokhrie (Jotsoma village) twice on the mat to receive INR 80,000 as the winner, while his opponent received INR 50,000 as the runner-up.

For the record, Nagi emerged champion in the biennial sports meet of Wayo sports on 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Kekhriezo Nagi from Sechü Zubza who stood third received INR 40,000 while

Lhuvikhoto Vakha of Khonoma village won the fourth position title and received INR 30,000.

In the junior division, Neikerhezo Zhünyü from Sechü Zubza received INR 30,000 as the winner while Sedenei Nakhro of Jotsoma village received INR 20,000 as the runner-up.

Kevizetuo Kuotsu of Sechü Zubza received INR 15,000, winning the third position title while Casavi Sophi from Khonoma village received INR 10,000 after winning the fourth place.

Wrestlers and Wayo officials paid tribute to Thekrusevi Meru, a wrestler from Khonoma who passed away while making preparations for the wrestling tournament on February 6, two days ahead of the event.

Earlier, speaking the event, MLA Keneizhakho Nakhro underscored the need to expose Naga style wrestling to the outside world.

In his short speech, he added that Naga youth have potentials in wrestling, and reminded the spectators to support and cheer the wrestlers while competing.
