DIPHU — The department of Education, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), on Wednesday distributed cash awards of INR 15,000 each under the Anundoram Borooah Cash Awards for meritorious students securing 75 percent and above marks in the HSLC examination from Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.

The programme was held at Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Memorial Town Hall, Diphu.

A total of 438 students, both boys and girls, were awarded. In Karbi Anglong, there were 132 boys and 153 girls among the 285 students. In West Karbi Anglong, 92 of the 153 students were boys, while 61 were girls. This time, there was a 93-student increase.

In his welcome address, Richard Tokbi, Executive Member (EM), KAAC for Education, stated that the award was established by the state government to encourage students to pursue higher academic careers and added that the award was named after Anudoram Borooah, the great scholar and first Assamese to join the British Indian Civil Service.

The EM advised the students who received the award to make the best use of it in order to benefit their future studies. Tokbi also expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his efforts to motivate students by introducing various schemes such as the distribution of scooters to meritorious girl students, the distribution of bicycles to Class 9 students, and many other schemes.

In his speech, KAAC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang attributed the students’ success to their hard work and positive parental guidance.

According to him, the Anundoram Borooah Cash Awards not only acknowledge the academic achievements of students but also foster a spirit of excellence and recognise students’ dedication to promoting a culture of academic brilliance.

The CEM, alongside KAAC Chairman Raju Tisso and EM Education Tokbi, ceremonially presented cheques to the meritorious students.

MLAs Bidyasing Engleng, Dorsing Ronghang, and Rupsing Teron, as well as EMs, MACs, and the district commissioner of Karbi Anglong, Madhumita Bhagawati, also attended the event.
