MDFA: Super Seniors and KSR edge past opponents to enter semis
MOKOKCHUNG — In the MDFA trophy quarter finals held at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Super Seniors narrowly defeated Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung (KSUM) in a thrilling tie-breaker, with a final score of 4-2. The match had initially ended in a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, KSR Team delivered an impressive performance, securing a dominant 3-0 victory over SSS on the same day.
Following a fruitful first half, Chuba Imchen put Super Seniors in front in the 17th minute. But KSUM equalised in the 75th minute via a penalty shot which Kapzei T converted.
KSUM got off to a perfect start, but after conceding a goal, tried their best to equalise. However, the Super Seniors defense line led by senior player Menang stood like a perfect wall averting many dangerous passes.
KSUM made attempts to pressurise the Seniors through set-piece opportunities, but their efforts did not yield the desired outcome. Their fortunes changed when a penalty was awarded, resulting in an equalising goal with just 15 minutes to go. Both teams relentlessly strived to break the deadlock during the regulation 90 minutes, plus additional injury time, with an intense display of football. Nonetheless, the match eventually proceeded to a tie-breaker.
KSUM began the challenge on a disappointing note, with Angki and Pulei Nahpohas missing their respective kicks. While W Kango and Kapzei T managed to convert their shots for KSUM, it was Super Seniors’ goalkeeper, Nungsangyanger, who shone by making two crucial saves. On the other hand, Super Seniors’ shooters – Chuba Imchen, Bendangsunep, Bendangmongba, and Temjenmeren – executed flawless kicks, ultimately securing a 4-2 victory for their team. As a result, Super Seniors earned the opportunity to face Moanungsang MSC in the upcoming semifinal match scheduled for Tuesday.
In the second match, KSR Team rode on a superb finish to enter the semi-final. S Ayenmongba, Yohto Lohe, and Lamsanggin Hangsing displayed their scoring prowess, finding the back of the net to eliminate SSS in the final quarterfinal match.
SSS exhibited their attacking intent right from the kickoff, but KSR responded with equal vigour. S Ayenmongba found the net in the 5th minute of the game, and Yohto Lohe leveled the score at 2-2 in the 28th minute.
In the second half, SSS started strongly and posed several threats to KSR, but they returned empty-handed due to a lack of finishing touches. Finally, Lamsanggin Hangsing rounded off KSR’s victory in the 90+2 minute, with a sublime finish 3-0.
KSR will be up against defending Champion Telongjem FC next for the semi-final on November 01.
