Kumari wins inter-collegiate debate competition

KOHIMA — Kajol Kumari from Alder College won the 16th edition of the inter-collegiate debate competition held at Sazolie College, Phezhu, in Kohima, on Friday.

Kumari, speaking for the motion on the topic ‘Artificial intelligence is a threat to human society,’ beat 19 other debaters representing various colleges, to become the champion of this year’s edition. She won prize money of INR 15, 000 along with a certificate.

Tiasen from Sazolie College, speaking for the motion, stood second, and Tiarenla, also speaking for the motion, from Fazl Ali College (FAC) was placed third. The first and second runner-ups received INR 10,000 and INR 5000, respectively, along with certificates.

The consolation winners were Zhoveto Lohe from Oriental College;  Huvelu Lohe from Kohima Science College Jotsoma; Ricky Das from Modern College, Sepithrong Sangtam from Tetso College and Keneiseruonuo Chatsu from St Joseph College, Jakhama.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, Prof. Glenn T Thong, was the guest of honour and critic.

The panel of judges included Ransom Lungleng, development professional and talk show host; Namang Chang, CEO, Modern Myrid Branding (MMB) and consultant IDAN, and Atoba Longkumer, founder and director of Tabernacle Technology Private Limited.

Earlier, principal of Sazolie College, Dr. Gopal Chetri, in his welcome address, said that technology should be oriented towards positive social change.

He said technology should be developed and designed to promote values, respect one another and encourage innovation.

The programme was chaired by Nzanmongi Kikon, assistant professor, department of Political Science.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Robin Temsu, convenor of the debate committee. The competition was moderated by Jonna Mozhui, assistant professor, department of Economics.

Over the years, Sazolie College has been successfully organising the inter-collegiate debate competition, giving platform to the college students to voice out their perspectives and opinions on trending issues and topics of relevance.
