Khonoma becomes first Horticulture Model Village in Nagaland
DIMAPUR — Khonoma village in Kohima district became the first Horticulture Model Village (HMV) in Nagaland. A launch programme of horticulture model village was organised by the department of Horticulture in Khonoma village on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister of Women Resources Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, who was also the special guest, informed that horticulture model village was conceptualised with a vision to take horticulture development activities in all corners of the state to increase productivity and enhance economic opportunities of the farmers under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) in every district.
She added that 16 villages, one in each district, have been identified with emphasis on increasing production of horticultural crops like kiwi, citrus, banana, pineapple, dragon fruit, Naga mircha etc., stated a DIPR report.
“Horticulture model village will holistically boost horticulture developmental activities in the villages as our approach are to develop one village one crop as a model for self-sufficiency and sustainability, which will support the livelihood of both the rural and urban population of the state,” Kruse said.
She mentioned that under horticulture model village, the village community would adopt innovative and modern technology for production and enhancing economic opportunities. The minister expressed confidence that with expertise and efficient officers in the department, horticulture model village would be successfully implemented in the state to boost the economy of the farmers and the state as a whole.
The chairman of Khonoma village council delivered the welcome address, while an invocation prayer was said by Rev. Tsolie Chase. An introductory speech was delivered by head of Horticuture department, Meyasashi, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by DHO of Kohima, Kevisetu Chase.
Later, the special guest launched the horticulture model village along with other officers and members from the villages.
