PHOLAMI — Observing that Nagas, as a tribal society, will never get rid of tribalism, the minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, has sought the need for healthy competition among different communities to take the society forward.

With relative peace prevailing in Nagaland following negotiations between the Government of India and Naga political groups, he stated that people must have more understanding and unity in the event of any outcome. He also questioned the preparedness of the Naga society in the event of ceasefire abrogation.

The minister stated this during the 14th biennial general conference of the Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) as the special guest at Pholami village in Phek district on Tuesday. He urged the youth to stand firm on the principles set by the pioneers to safeguard the people.

He viewed that the Chakhesang community is catching up with the rest of society and thriving. In this regard, he asserted the need to forge an alliance and have a better understanding.

Stating that the Chakhesang tribe was previously known as Eastern Angami, he informed that the recognition of the tribe and subsequent separation was not out of misunderstanding but the meticulous steps taken by the elders. He stressed the need to uphold brotherhood between the Angami and the Chakhesang tribe and beyond other communities of the Nagas.

Highlighting the prevailing situation in Phek district’s neighbouring Myanmar and Manipur state, he urged the people to remain watchful of the situation. He further urged the youth to renew and reach out to the people and uphold brotherhood to unify the Nagas.

Delivering the presidential address, Vezhoduyi Nakro, said that CYF was founded during trying times of political and social crisis. He added that in the backdrop of the Naga national movement when its leaders were exposed to various dangers and threats to their lives, the youth rose to the occasion and protected their leaders. He informed that CYF was formed on July 20, 1995, to protect and serve its community and the nation.

“CYF history is one of patriotism and an instinct to protect our people,” said Nakro while he accredited the pioneers for their integrity, strength of character and beliefs.

While highlighting the various initiatives of the CYF, Nakro appealed to its constituent units and members to safeguard its land, resources, tradition and people.

Vezuhu Keyho, president of Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), greeted the gathering and reminded that CYF was formed during trying times to defend the Naga nation and in particular the Chakhesang community. He exhorted the youth to never compromise on their principles and be afraid to speak the truth but remain steadfast to uphold integrity.

Kesosul Christopher Ltu, president of Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), extended greetings on the occasion and he stressed the need for AYO and CYF to foster more understanding to strengthen ties among the communities.

The programme was led by Nyitso Therie, CYF vice president, while a song was presented by Dzüzühve Swuro and a folk song was presented by Ura Dzüvekro of Pholami village.

The minister also unveiled a monolith to commemorate the occasion and released the amended constitution of the CYF.

Meanwhile, CYF has elected Kevesa Khamo as president, Vetho Vadeo and Nuveta Khusoh as vice presidents and Nokho Nyekha as general secretary for the tenure 2024-2026.

The ‘Best Performing Biodiversity Award’ was awarded to Kutsapo village, and the ‘Best Piggery Farmer Award’ was presented to Lhiwetso Wezah from Zapami, Vecusuyi Chuzho from Rihuba village, Thupupra Medeo from Khusomi village, Pudusayi Dasai from Porba village, and Thupuve Vero from Phek Village.
