Rap as a genre is more popular than it has ever been before. But in Nagaland Rap music has never been taken earnestly. One man who is proving the capacity of Rap music is, Dimapur based artist Leengoi Phom also socially known as Loyal D.
Leengoi aka Loyal D started out his music journey in the year 2013 with no musical background, going beyond the normal streams of music by experimenting with different genres of music, Leengoi is also currently producing EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Music he says has changed the whole scene of his life. He has performed at various shows like Hornbill Bamboo Fest,Jumping Bean, The Garden, Music Awards of Nagaland to name a few.
Getting candid with Eastern Mirror’s Rhythm Of Love, Loyal D candidly says that the christening of his name Loyal D is a tribute to music with his Loyalty for music and D- Dimapur which is close to his heart. Read on to get close with Loyal D. EASTERN MIRROR: How did you first get introduced to rap and who were your greatest inspirations?
Leengoi Phom: I started writing poems which I was always fascinated about which eventually turned into verses that I could rap with.
I don’t really have a particular person that I got an inspiration for rap music but I have always been listening to Eminem & Tupac Shakur to new rap stars Wiz Khalifa & Kendrick Lamar.

EASTERN MIRROR: Rapping is very peculiar, especially in Nagaland but an incredible talent. When did you decide to pursue rap as a professional career?
Leengoi Phom: Rapping I should say is rare and different from other genre’s and in Nagaland it has not been a big role in the music industry but it’s something that only 1 out of 10 people can do and since I found out that I was one of them I decided to give it a shot and so my journey took off.

EASTERN MIRROR: How does lyric writing work for you. How much does genuineness play a role in your music?
Leengoi Phom: Talking about lyrics I mostly refer to our life, our dreams and wishes which eventually works great time and it is a great way to express myself which is quite honest and clear to be turned into a song.

EASTERN MIRROR: Do you think there is room for a rapper to be successful in Nagaland, a place that seems obsessed with other forms of contemporary music? What are your personal views on rap culture today?
Leengoi Phom: In this case I would say everything is successful in its own way; all we need to do is focus and strive for it. Rap culture has always been a part of my life and has grown together with me and which I believe will never go off the charts.

EASTERN MIRROR: What has the response to your music been like so far?
Leengoi Phom: When I start a verse on the stage people get involved to my music. They say there is something in my music that is rare and worth listening.

EASTERN MIRROR: How would you describe yourself as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the future and whom do you feel is your audience?
Leengoi Phom: As an artist I am standing in a line of millions trying to reach the top and I have always been working on fresh music and which I believe keeps mesmerizing people. The future is unseen and unknown but Day by day I am gaining more experience and my hopes are high to reach out people around the world. My family, friends and music lovers have always been a great audience from whom I get the courage to keep on.

EASTERN MIRROR: I believe you are venturing into EDM. Why the shift from rap to EDM?
Leengoi Phom: Yes, you are right I recently got caught up into producing EDM but it doesn’t actually mean a shift from rap music as I am working on both the genres in one piece which I believe is a great combination.

EASTERN MIRROR: What is your latest album about?
Leengoi Phom: I have recently released two of my EDM instrumental tracks “Move On” and “Years” which is all about life, dance and people.

EASTERN MIRROR: What can we expect from you by the end of 2015?
Leengoi Phom: Am always working on my records and by the end of 2015 I will be releasing my new single titled “Go beyond” which I believe will be a fresh tone for listeners.

EASTERN MIRROR: How can people get in touch with you and your music?
Leengoi Phom: They can always reach me on my Facebookpage @mobile.Facebook.com/LeengoiNaga18 and tune in @ www.reverbnation.com/9/64uk29.
