‘Crimson Flow’ formed three in 2013 is a cross-genre duo based in Mumbai.
Alan & Martin who formed the band after playing together at NCF Mumbai team write spiritually oriented songs in all genres starting from acoustic to metal.
‘Crimson Flow’ believes ‘music’ is a powerful medium of entertainment that has the ability to change or destroy lives.
Crimson Flow over these few years of existence has performed in various cultural and student programmes in the city and outside as well.
With Martin an Engineering student and Alan a banker, the duo though not a full time profession, take music seriously. The band’s new single “Love Came Down” is an alternative/pop ballad that speaks about Love seeking us out when we are lost in a world of confusion.
EASTERN MIRROR: A little intro about your band
Crimson flow: We are a two man band formed 3 years back in Mumbai (Martin Dailiam on the guitars/bass and Alan Wungsek on vocals and backing guitars). We started off as an experimental duo basically to have fun while writing new material. We met in NCF Mumbai playing together in the worship team. Both of us have similar taste in music and we both love making up new songs. While Martin enjoys weaving together the music, Alan would come in with the lyrical and vocal content and thus the two complement each other perfectly. We prefer to be original and have never done a cover song on stage in our three years together. We are also not bound by genres and love to experiment with different forms of music ranging from metal, alternative to acoustic ballads and even techno beats.
Being just two in a band is not a handicap at all. Yes, on stage we have to use backing tracks to perform but things become much more easier logistically behind the stage while making songs and putting together albums. There are many two member bands like Savage Garden and Twentyone Pilots who have made memorable music so we see it rather as a strength rather than a constraint. Our major setback is the lack of a drummer for which we had to hire a session drummer to record our first album (available for free download on Soundcloud.com/crimsonflow). For recording our second project (details on our Facebook page) we programmed the drums ourselves. Martin is a multi-instrumentalist, and we have set up a rudimentary home studio which gives us the freedom freedom to work on and record the tunes as the inspiration comes.
The name ‘Crimson Flow’ denotes the sacrificial blood of Jesus on the cross which is perfect and enough to set us free, save us and give us life eternal.
EASTERN MIRROR: What do you think is the role of music when it comes to transforming a society?
Crimson flow: Music is one, if not the most, powerful form of entertainment. It was music that brought down the walls of Jericho and stilled the possessed mind of king Saul. We make music for fun but at the same time we believe we have been delegated with a bigger responsibility as we can speed the message of love, hope and peace through it. It is vice versa. Music can also spread negative emotions and notions like a virus that can change the mindset and emotional balance of an entire generation. Music is deeply rooted in the culture of any society and the advantage of our current times is that we have the technology to make our music global in presence. So the impact of a simple encouraging song we write might help a teenager in Brazil! This is an immensely powerful advantage we have been blessed with. Christian musicians, therefore ought to step out of the church into the world and make themselves heard taking full advantage of the technology we have at our disposal.
EASTERN MIRROR: Most memorable moment of performing together as a band.
Crimson flow: We have performed in several cultural and student gatherings in the city. Performing in “Nagaland Festival” in 2015 was the most memorable. It was a multi-talent event and we sang three acoustic songs, sharing the stage with many other talented musicians.
EASTERN MIRROR: What is your new single “Love Came Down” all about?
Crimson flow: The song is about God seeking us out when we were still rebels and transgressors. It is also about the universal search for truth that is instilled in every person. God is love and when we find love we have found the ultimate truth. But the irony is that we cannot find that truth by ourselves. It is love that finds us and not the other way around. This is what we mean when the song says “Love came down and Heaven came looking for me”. The music is different from what we have done earlier and would fit into alternative pop ballad. It is available for free download on Indihut.com.
EASTERN MIRROR: Is music your full time career or you have some other things going on ?
Crimson flow: Although we take music seriously, it is not our full time pursuit. Martin is an Electronics Engineering student, keeping studies as his first priority, and Alan works as a manager with RBI. We come together on weekends and holidays to make music. Having been blessed with alternate income, we could afford to give away our music for free which is an immensely satisfying experience although we are yet to find a big fan following. In the long run we intend to build our respective careers while keeping music as a close second priority.
EASTERN MIRROR: Top 5 favorite bands or artists of all time.
Crimson flow: We are inspired by several bands and artistes and to name a few would not do justice. However, we love Dream Theatre, Tesseract, Rise Against, Trivium, Sky Harbour etc.
EASTERN MIRROR: A piece of advice for the young upcoming musicians.
Crimson flow: Believe in yourself and be yourself. Don’t imitate others but be original. Never stop trusting God because he trusts in you enough to have given you the talent.
