KOHIMA — The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a fresh notification detailing the questions to be asked during the houselisting and housing census ahead of the Census of India 2027.
The notification, issued by the office of the Registrar General of India under Section 8(1) of the Census Act, 1948, has been published in supersession of an earlier notification dated January 7, 2020. The directive authorises census officers to collect updated household-level information within their respective jurisdictions.
As per the notification, data will be collected on 33 items covering housing conditions, household characteristics, amenities and asset ownership. These include building and census house numbers, materials used for floors, walls and roofs, use and condition of the census house, and ownership status.
Household-related information will cover the number of members, name and sex of the head of the household, social category, number of dwelling rooms, and the number of married couples residing in the household.

The houselisting phase will also capture details on access to basic amenities such as drinking water, lighting, sanitation facilities, waste water outlets, bathing and kitchen facilities, and the type of fuel used for cooking. Information on the availability of LPG or PNG connections will also be collected.
To assess living standards and digital access, households will be asked about ownership of assets including radios, televisions, computers, mobile phones, bicycles, two-wheelers and cars, along with access to the internet. The main cereal consumed by the household will also be recorded.
For the first time during this phase, household mobile numbers will be collected strictly for census-related communication purposes, the notification clarified.
The government stated that the new notification will guide houselisting and housing census operations for Census 2027, while actions already taken under the earlier notification will remain unaffected.
