After the NDPP-BJP alliance won 37 seats in the 60-member assembly, the election for which was held on February 27, BJP units from four districts — Kohima, Phek, Peren and Tseminyu — have demanded a cabinet berth for BJP MLA Kropol Vitsu.

This was put forth on Saturday during a joint press conference held at BJP head office in Kohima by BJP Kohima district president Khrielie Usou, Peren district president Huzantadbo Meriam, Vice-president Phek district S Pusai Rhakho and Thomas Magh, state executive representing Tseminyu district.

Vitsu won the 15 Southern Angami II Assembly Constituency (AC) under Kohima district, and the leaders stated that the MLA represents the four districts for BJP, which covers a total of 14 Assembly Constituencies.

Usou, while expressing his gratitude to the state and Central leadership and the electorates for reposing their trust on Kropol Vitsu, said that the elected member has a major role to play and a vast area to cover.

The leaders opined that the lone BJP elected candidate from the area should be given a good cabinet berth/portfolio in order to let him perform his task in all the 14 constituencies.

‘In the last 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, without a party legislator or a candidate, it was a big problem to work for the party. So in the last term, we have struggled a lot but by the grace of God and with the sacrifice of all the party workers now, we have at least one MLA. We request our Central leaders, our state leaders to give him a good portfolio so that all the karyakartas do not face the problem which we have faced in the last 13th NLA,’ Usou said.

The leaders also pointed out that since 2013, the four districts did not get any opportunity to serve the people with the help of an MLA or ministers from the BJP party and now that a representative has been elected, they urged the leaders to take their appeal into consideration.

‘We have one MLA, so if we are given the opportunity, if he is given the responsibility, we will be able to serve our people. Our party is focusing on serving the people not only as a political party, not only giving interest in politics but in social aspects too and unless we have that opportunity and unless we have somebody to guide us, somebody to help us we have no way to serve our people,’ the leaders stated.

Further, the leaders also maintained that no official letter or memorandum has been submitted to the state or Central leadership on this matter. However, they expressed optimism that the leadership of the party will pay heed to their appeal. Kohima, March 4 (EMN)
