KOHIMA —  Following criticisms from various quarters over the controversial remarks on ‘human-elephant conflict’ made by Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, CL John, in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) session on September 12, the minister on Thursday tendered an apology.

The minister’s apology came on the last day of the second session of the 14th NLA, before he moved a resolution on Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act, 2023.

“I on my personal behalf apologise to victims and affected people, in my way of communication, talking for hurting the sentiments while giving a report. I do not mean any ill intentions. I also sincerely and deeply regret unconditionally,” John said in the assembly.

It may be mentioned that on September 12, NPF Legislator Achumbemo Kikon, representing Bhandari assembly seat in Wokha district, raised concerns about the human-elephant conflict in his constituency.

The minister, in his reply, made light of the human-elephant conflict stating that only eight persons were killed as against 12 elephant deaths in Wokha district. The minister even went on to remark that there was nothing to worry about since ‘humans are winning,” eliciting laughter from some legislators.
