Educational institutions across Nagaland mark Earth Day with cleanliness drives, plantation programmes, and awareness campaigns.

DIMAPUR — Multiple educational institutions in Nagaland celebrated Earth Day by organising rallies, cleanliness drives, plantation programmes, and awareness campaigns.
Nagaland University: The Department of Geography at Nagaland University hosted a two-day Earth Day programme on the global theme “Our power, our planet: Integrating science, society and policy for sustainable futures” under the aegis of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Day one on April 21 began with the registration of Kendriya Vidyalaya students for a drawing competition on the theme of renewable energy, resource depletion, and climate change. This was followed by a plastic waste removal drive, where the collected waste was weighed, documented, and disposed of.
Day two featured a rally from Rajiv Gandhi Park to the Department of Geography.
Fazl Ali College: Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung observed Earth Day through a signature campaign organised by the Eco Club.
Students, faculty members, and staff participated in the campaign by signing a pledge board and expressing their commitment towards environmental protection, sustainable living, and keeping the surroundings clean and green.
The Eco Club also encouraged all departments to observe Earth Day through eco-friendly activities such as cleanliness drives, awareness programmes, planting, green quizzes, and sharing a thought for the day.
MITE: The Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) in Kohima organised a cleanliness drive spearheaded by the institute’s Ecological and Current Event Clubs, with participation from both faculty and student-teachers.
The day commenced with a formal programme in the institute’s auditorium. Pulovi M Swu delivered a poetry reading aligned with the Earth Day theme, reflecting on the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Mudotalu Kezo shared practical strategies for environmental preservation, urging the audience to use their influence to drive sustainable change.
Following the formal session, student-teachers were mobilised into six groups to carry out cleaning activities across Porterlane, AG Colony, Mohonkhola, the Lerie area, and the MITE campus.
Modern Cambridge School: Earth Day was observed at Modern Cambridge School in Amahator town, Kiphire, organised by the 30 Assam Rifles, led by Company Commander Major KC Babu and Naib Subedar HD Roy along with jawans.
The jawans sensitised the students and the community on the causes of soil erosion and its preventive measures. Students were also encouraged to concentrate on their studies. Crayons, scales, sharpeners, pencils, and notebooks were distributed to the students.
Signifying the occasion, the plantation of pine trees was carried out along with the students.
