Nagaland election 2023: More than 100 candidates file nomination papers

A total of 124 intending candidates, including 18 standbys have filed their nomination papers for the upcoming general election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to be held on February 27.

According to an update from the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, as many as 117 candidates, including incumbent Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his deputy Y Patton filed their papers on Monday, a day before the filing of nomination closes.

Accompanied by the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) workers and supporters, Rio filed his nomination papers before the Returning Officer and ADC of Chiephobozou around 11.30 am on Monday.

He will be contesting on NDPP ticket from 11 Northern Angami-II Assembly Constituency, the seat he won uncontested in the previous poll. However, the Indian National Congress had announced Seyievilie Chachu as its candidate for the constituency this time.

Speaking to journalists after filing his nomination papers, Rio said he was hopeful of the NDPP-BJP alliance coming back to power and that other political parties may not pose as a big challenge.

Dimapur, Feb. 4 (EMN): As many as nine candidates, including a standby, filed their papers for the Dimapur-I, II and III Assembly constituencies with the Returning Officer at the Deputy Commissioner office in Dimapur, on Monday.

Dimapur-I AC: Tovihoto Ayemi of BJP was accompanied by Union Minister for Minority Affairs John Barla and state’s minister of PHED Jacob Zhimomi during the filing of his nomination papers. He said the preparation for the election is full on.

Dimapur-II AC: Four candidates filed their nominations for this constituency on Monday.

After filing his papers on NDPP ticket, Moatoshi Longkumer said the supporters are intact and he has big expectations with the support of the party.

An Independent candidate, Supu Jamir said he is contesting as an Independent as he was denied a BJP ticket. He said there is no question of withdrawing his candidature, while expressing confidence of coming out in flying colours.

S Amento Chishi of INC said that he is contesting in the Assembly election due to public demand and that he has no intention of withdrawing his candidature.

Y Vikheho Awomi, who is contesting on LJP(RV) ticket, said that he is confident as people have studied who is who.

Meanwhile, Kerenjungla Longkumer of NDPP also filed nomination as a standby candidate.

Dimapur-III AC: K Lun Tungnung is contesting as an Independent. He said after filing the nomination papers that the younger generation should look beyond money power and choose someone who can bring real change.

Hekani Jakhalu of NDPP ticket said after filing her nomination papers that she is confident of winning the election not because of her strength but because of the people, women, youth and others who are rooting for her as they want change. She added that she is fighting for the people.

On various rumours and allegations against her, she replied that she is upset about lots of propaganda against her, as she has a dream and goal to work for the people. ‘Many people have tarnished my image but I need to focus on the bigger goal and picture,’ she added.
