Campaign for women and girls held in Zunheboto

DIMAPUR — Zunheboto district administration and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Mission Shakti), Zunheboto, conducted a week-long awareness campaign for women and girls.

A DIPR report stated that the week-long campaign was initiated by Viketoulie Metha, EAC headquarters and nodal officer of DHEW-BBBP (Mission Shakti), and Ikali Wokhami, district mission coordinator of DHEW-BBBP, Zunheboto.

During the campaign, various activities were organised in different villages under Zunheboto district. It stated that the week-long awareness campaign was organised mainly for women and girls including differently-abled, socially and economically marginalised and vulnerable groups in need of care and protection. 

The campaign kicked-off with Under-18 badminton tournament for girls held at badminton stadium in Zunheboto town on October 23 and 24. In the opening ceremony, the deputy commissioner of Zunheboto, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, stressed on the importance of women participation in the field of sports.

It was followed with sensitisation programme on the theme related to women covering nine villages in Akuluto block in VK headquarters circle namely Ajiqa, Izheto, Litta Old, Litta New, Maromi, Mukhami, Phushumi, Sastami and VK Ha on October 25. 

An important highlight of the week-long campaign was ‘Special women gram sabha’ held in collaboration with the Panchayati Raj at Ajiqa village council hall with the women, SHGs, GBs, council members and church leaders. It stated that a ‘Women grievance cell’ was formed to record and support women in distress and in need of care and protection or any women related issues during the programme.

Awareness programme on village health sanitation and nutrition was observed at Health and Wellness Centre in Litta Old and Litta New villages, which was followed with intensive training programmes for the Anganwadi and ASHA workers of nine villages at VK community hall on health and hygiene, monitoring of women to avail benefits such as PMMVY, JSY, SSA and implementation of MCPC to promote birth registration through counseling. 

A programme on ‘Women safety and security, child rights and POCSO’ was facilitated by Viketoulie Metha and Kiyepu Yeptho, gender specialist at DHEW-BBBP.

The week-long programme concluded with a free medical camp in VK town for women and girls on the theme “Whole health: Prevention, care and wellbeing,” conducted by Dr. Mughaka Sumi, medical officer of VK PHC, and his staff. Free medical services such as NCD screening, provision of medicines, arthritis care, acute peptic disease care, family planning IUCD, immunisation upkeep, infant care, and counseling were provided during the health camp.
