Call for vigorous efforts toward sustainability
KOHIMA — The principal director of School Education, Thavaseelan K, on Saturday called for more vigorous efforts towards sustainability where thinking needs to do much more than conventional ways, while he also emphasised on the need for more hands-on project-based learning with critical thinking.
He stated this during the National Education Day 2023 programme organised by Nagaland Education Association (NEA) held at the Directorate of School Education in Kohima.
The official mentioned that the department is focusing on five pillars namely foundational literacy and numeracy, bridging the gaps what is needed in terms of physical infrastructure and digital infrastructure for the schools, pedagogical, curriculum and assessment to competence and vocational education to help children developed entrepreneurial mindset and inclusive education to give same opportunity to every children.
He further emphasised on the need to prioritise education for rapid development.
The resource person and professor of Education department at Nagaland University, Prof. Lungsang Zeliang, stressed on the need to equip the upcoming generations with knowledge, skills and competencies to prepare them for a sustainable future. In this regard, she pointed out the need to make education system more inclusive and resilient to future challenges towards preparing children for a greener future, providing digital solutions, advancing gender equality, increasing employment security and empowering young people to become effective leaders on priority.
She expounded the need for innovative options and alternatives, keeping in mind the need to meet the UN-SDG 9 to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation in alignment with the NEP 2020.
She also underscored the need for community involvement, governance and assessment that need to work in tandem in order to create conducive environment for learning and innovative thinking that would be robust.
She further pointed out the need for timely update of learning curriculum and ideal learning and not confined to conventional learning alone.
Dr. Zavise Rume, president of Nagaland Education Association (NEA), highlighted how the NEA was formed to have professional association of the educationist and change the landscape of the education scenario in the state.
He also highlighted on the significance of National Education Day in honour of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, which was announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on November 11, 2008.
While advocating on the need for professionalism in teaching, he also sought concerted efforts of the counselors and others along with teachers for regular interface in order to improve and help education grow.
