AFSPA extended in eight districts and 21 police stations in Nagaland

- KOHIMA — The
Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has extended the Armed Forces (Special
Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, for six months in eight districts and 21 police
stations across five other districts in Nagaland, starting from April 1.
- According to the notification issued on Sunday, AFSPA will
continue to be in force in Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire,
Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts.
- In addition, specific police station jurisdictions in
Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha, and Zunheboto districts have been
designated as “disturbed areas.”
- These include, Kohima district: Khuzama, Kohima North,
Kohima South, Zubza, and Kezocha police stations; Mokokchung district:
Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-1, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem, and Anaki ‘C’ police
stations; Longleng district: Yanglok police station; Wokha district: Bhandari,
Champang, and Ralan police stations; and Zunheboto district: Ghatashi,
Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto, and Aghunato police stations.
- The notification stated that the decision was made following
a review of the law and order situation in the state. AFSPA grants special
powers to security forces deployed in “disturbed areas,” including conducting
operations, searches, and arrests without prior warrants.
- The Act will remain in effect from April 1 for six months
unless withdrawn earlier by the government.
