CHETHEBA — Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, on Tuesday said that the Department of School Education is taking all efforts for day-to-day improvement of the education sector in the state.


The advisor was addressing the 50th anniversary celebration of Government High School (GHS) Chetheba, held at local ground, Chetheba.


Yhome stated that education has spread rapidly across Nagaland, with the state now ranking third in the country for literacy rate.


He acknowledged the pioneers and elders who not only embraced Christianity but also education, which greatly impacted the people, while adding that Nagas have also invested significantly in education.


He maintained that in the present context, the wealth of parents is measured by the investment they make in their children and their professions.


The advisor stated that the case of GHS Chetheba merits a higher secondary school, considering the presence of considerably six high schools with over 15,000 population in Chetheba.


However, he noted that GHS Chetheba has low enrolment, while nearby private schools are thriving. He pointed out that many private schools have been established across the state, often sidelining government schools, despite lacking qualified teachers compared to government schools.

Dr. Yhome urged teachers in government schools to be sincere and dedicated, as many families make sacrifices to send their children to private schools. He appealed for community support for GHS Chetheba and suggested merging the primary and high schools to rationalise resources, noting the government prioritises people's needs.


He also called for concerted efforts from the community to check and monitor the teachers, report absenteeism, and highlight shortages of teachers, assuring that the government would take necessary actions to address the issues.


Furthermore, Yhome called for the concerted efforts of all stakeholders to rethink the revival of government schools to serve their intended purpose.

Guest of honour and Advisor for CAWD and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, paid tribute to the pioneers of the school who nurtured and supported the school over the years.


He impressed upon Dr. Yhome to consider the upgrade of GHS Chetheba to a higher secondary school, realising the urgent need of the people from Chokri area.

Khamo noted the changing dynamics where even people with qualifications are failing to secure government jobs, highlighting the need to pursue quality education and diverse professions to contribute to society's growth.


He stated that society encounters problems and challenges such as substance abuse, and called upon parents to take responsibility to groom and guide their children with Christian values and develop competency to succeed in life.


The school’s history was presented by Nuzota Swuro, Chairman of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA), who highlighted the sacrifices of the pioneers and leaders in the past who groomed the school till date, and paid tributes to them.


Vepozoyi Theyo, president of Chokri Area Public Organisation (CAPO), also requested the advisor for School Education to upgrade GHS Chetheba.


A speech on behalf of the alumni was delivered by Chothazo Nienu, assistant professor at Pfutsero Government College. Welcome address was delivered by Melesa Swuro, assistant headmaster, GHS Chetheba, and the invocation prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. Suluveyi Rhakho, co-ordinator, Globeserve International NM America.


Earlier, Khamo released the golden jubilee souvenir, Dr. Yhome unveiled the monolith, and the dedicatory prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. P. Bonny Resu, lead pastor, Chakhesang Baptist Church, Dimapur.
