NSF organises candlelight vigil for peace in Manipur
KOHIMA— The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on Wednesday organised a candlelight vigil for restoration of peace and cessation of violence in Manipur under the aegis of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) in Kohima.
Speaking during the event, NESO Secretary General and former NSF president, Mutsikhoyo Yhobu, said the organisation is “shocked” at the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Manipur ethnic violence which has been volatile situation for weeks.
‘The silence of the prime minister will alienate the Northeast people,’ he said while requesting Modi to restore peace if the Centre has no hidden agenda.
He also urged the central and Manipur governments to take measures to bring normalcy in the state.
The Union Home Minister visited has the state and there are over 40,000 armed personnel along with state police but that could not stop the killing. This shows the centre is “not sincere” on the matter, he said.
He informed that NESO has called for candlelight vigil in the northeastern states to show solidarity with people of the Manipur who have been suffering for more than 50 days.
NESO team will be visiting Manipur and meet with the tribals as well as the Meiteis and request both the groups to shun violence as it will not bring any solution, he said.
‘The organisations will find out a common platform for the tribals and Meiteis to come to a dialogue through which everything can be resolved,’ he added.
He also appealed to the Manipur government to restore peace and re-open educational institutions as the closure is affecting the youths.
NSF President Kegwayhun Tep said that the symbolic programme held in all the northeastern states is to convey solidarity with the citizens of Manipur.
He said it is ‘very hard and painful’ to see the state burning for the last 57 days. While condemning the killings, he appealed for peace and tranquility.
The federating units and subordinating units of the NSF attended the candlelight vigil.
