Zeliang Students' Union Nagaland holds its district-level literary competition in Peren with 100 students from 21 institutions.

DIMAPUR — The Zeliang Students' Union Nagaland (ZLSU) conducted its district-level literary day-cum-competition at Town Hall, Peren, on August 21, with 100 students from 21 educational institutions competing in essay writing, prepared speech and extempore speech.
The participants included 56 students in essay writing, 35 in prepared speech and nine in extempore speech. The institutions comprised 12 private schools, six government schools, two government colleges and one private college.
According to an update, ZLSU President Roland Zeliang said the competition was aimed at strengthening students’ writing, communication and public-speaking skills while fostering unity among the student community.
The programme was chaired by ZLSU Women Coordinator Silvia Hingleu. District Education Officer Limadangit Jamir delivered words of encouragement, while Deputy Commissioner, Peren, Hiazu Meru attended as the special guest.
Meru spoke on education, environmental conservation, substance abuse, employment and representation, and the development challenges facing the Peren district. He also referred to the Nagaland Tree Felling Regulation Rules, 2002, Nagaland Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 2004, Article 371A, and concerns over logging and riverbed extraction.
Citing departmental data, he said around 744 persons have been recorded in connection with substance abuse in the district. Referring to the 2011 Census and PIMS data, he cited Nagaland’s population as 19,78,502, with approximately 1,23,392 government employees, including around 3,223 from the Zeliang tribe.
He also informed the gathering that Peren Government College is in the process of pursuing NAAC accreditation.
The competition concluded with the declaration of results and a vote of thanks by ZLSU Education & Statistics Secretary Haipeurangbe Ndang.
In essay writing, Mesanthu Mbung of Baptist High School, Tening, secured first position; Ichetwangbe of Baptist Higher Secondary School, Peren, second; and Keyisuile Thou of Kirjath Jearim Mission School third.
In prepared speech, Kangzangheing of St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Jalukie, secured first position; Keheikangyile of the same institution, second; and Aien Siang of Govt. Higher Secondary, Peren, third.
In extempore speech, Sangjemwati Jamir of St. Xavier College, Jalukie, secured first position, while Lakhon Lyndoh and Sanal Debarma of the College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Jalukie, secured second and third positions, respectively.
