20th Nagaland State Chess Championship concludes
KOHIMA — Melesai Dawhuo emerged as the champion of the 20th Nagaland State Chess Championship in the open category, which was held at the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) complex in Kohima. The event, organised by the Nagaland Chess Association (NCA), commenced on July 30.
Securing eight points with a progressive score of 43, Dawhuo topped the open category. Kevilekho Zumvu was the first runner-up, Toivi Yeptho was the second runner-up, and Bovito Yeptho finished fourth.
Kughaho Kiho, Viseyie Yano, Khoveto Vero, Khrielie Sano, Heilamgumbe, and Ketholelie secured the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth positions, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the Under-18 category, Intovi Awomi was the champion. Shurhozhalie Sebastian Solo was the first runner-up, Pulonito Hesso was the second runner-up, and Viboka Awomi and Muzaveto Phesao secured fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
In the Under-14 category, Jitito Nyekha emerged as the champion, with Vesho Doulo as the first runner-up, Neipedezo Metha as the second runner-up, Gihuca Chishi in fourth place, and Mereh Doulo in fifth place.
Shenikali Hesso was adjudged the best female player, Sede Nagi was named the best player aged 60 and above, and Noune Terhuja was recognised as the best player Under-7 years.
The chief arbiter, international arbiter Mughaho Awomi, informed that the top four players will represent Nagaland at the 61st National Chess Championship 2024, scheduled to be held from August 17 to 27, 2024, in Haryana.
He also mentioned that among the players for this edition of the championship, six-year-old Reku Haikam was the youngest player, while 68-year-old K Sekhamo was the oldest.
S Keoshu Yimkhiung, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, attended the valedictory function as the special guest. He noted that the championship showcased intellectual prowess, sportsmanship, and dedication, marking a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to fostering chess over the past two decades.
He highlighted the remarkable growth of chess in Nagaland, noting how it has evolved from a niche interest to a celebrated competition that attracts talent from all corners of the state.
The advisor commended all players for their inspiring performances, emphasising that each game, whether leading to victory or defeat, contributed to their experience and growth as chess players.
Extending congratulations to the winners, he said their achievements reflect their dedication and hard work, setting a high standard for future competitions. For those who did not secure a trophy, he encouraged them to view each match as a learning experience and urged them to continue honing their skills and passion for chess.
New team of NCA 2024–27
Meanwhile, K Sekhamo, convenor of the nomination committee, announced a new team of office bearers for the 2024–27 tenure.
The team will be headed by S Keoshu Yimkhiung as president, Pele Khezhie as working president, Mughaho Awomi and Mohokiya Apon as vice-presidents, and Vekukho Soho as honorary secretary, among others.
