12 schools compete in Athletics Meet in Kohima
KOHIMA — The Department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), in celebration of National Sports Day 2024, organised the Athletics Meet 2024 at Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS), Kohima, on Wednesday.
Addressing the inaugural session, Director of YRS, Kethosituo Sekhose, informed that this year the department is organising a two-day event for National Sports Day, with the first day featuring inter-school athletic competitions and the second day an award ceremony for meritorious sportspersons.
He also appreciated the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Nagaland, for collaborating with the YRS department to conduct the event, adding that the Election department is interested in ensuring that young people who will be eligible voters in the future understand their rights as young men and women.
In this regard, to raise awareness among the students, the CEO’s office decided to present the best athlete for boys and girls in different categories—classes 7 and 8, and classes 9 and 10—with a sum of INR 4,000 each, he said.
A total of 12 private schools with 309 students, comprising 132 girls and 177 boys, took part in the 100m dash, 200m and 400m races, long jump, and triple jump during the day-long event.
The participating schools were Fernwood School, Mezhür Higher Secondary School, G Rio Higher Secondary School, Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School, Dainty Buds, Chandmari Higher Secondary School, Northfield School, Coraggio School, Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Usou Memorial School (RDNUMS), The Vineyard, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, and Ministers Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School.
In the medal tally, Don Bosco School secured first place with a total of 15 medals, including 8 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze. Northfield School came in second with 12 medals, comprising 4 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze. Chandmari School achieved third place with 3 medals, consisting of 2 gold and 1 silver.
G Rio School was fourth with 7 medals, including 1 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze. Dainty Buds finished fifth with 8 medals, comprising 1 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze. The Vineyard placed sixth with 5 medals, including 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze.
RDNUMS, Mt. Hermon, and Fernwood were tied for seventh place, each earning 2 medals—1 gold and 1 bronze.
Minister’s Hill School was eighth with 1 silver. Coraggio School and Mezhür School finished ninth and tenth with 2 bronze and 1 bronze, respectively.
