ZPO asserts Rights of native Zeliang Nagas

The Zeliang Public Organization of Nagaland has asserted the legitimate place of the native Zeliang Naga citizens in Nagaland and their right to managing their own affairs and not under or by any other group such as the “Zeliangrong.” The Zeliangrong is not a statutory tribe and is recognized neither in Nagaland or anywhere else, the Zeliang People’s Organization stated Friday and has warned the government of Nagaland against engineering “ulterior motives” to undermine the native Zeliang Nagas of Nagaland.
The Zeliang People Organisation of Nagaland met recently to review its activities following the demise of its president N Azu Newmai who passed away on November 26. The organization’s leaders met on Thursday December 12. Before proceeding, the organization paid homage to its departed president.
The organization referred to the issue of legitimate custodianship of the Zeliang Nagas’ Morung that is in Naga heritage village Kisama under Kohima. The organization resolved to “unflinchingly uphold the rights of native Zeliangs to the effect that measures will be initiated to convince the government if at all there still persist ulterior motives and right of managing the affairs of Zeliang Morung are still to be given to organisations existing under the aegis of Zeliangrong…” A press release from the group was received on Friday.
The organization reminded that “Zeliangrong” is not a recognised tribe either in Nagaland or anywhere.
In other matters, the Zeliang People Organization instated an officiating president until the formal expiry of the current term of president and until such time the general session of the ZPO Nagaland proposed at the earliest and a new team of executive is constituted. The organization unanimously resolved that Ramdi Meru, vice president of ZPO Nagaland would hold the current officiating charge of the president of Zeliang People Organisation of Nagaland with immediate effect,”
The meeting also rescheduled the date for its proposed general session originally to be held on December 14. The meeting finalised Friday January 24, 2014 as the date while the venue was to be Peren town for the stated general session.
Also, the meeting resolved that the committee on Compilation of Zeliang Customary Laws should submit its report preferably before the general session.
