DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 14

AFTER a fortnight of living a nightmare of garbage, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has come in for some respite. Zogazou ‘P’ Khel , en route to Rusoma village, has been notified as the temporary dumping site for the capital’s waste from February 15. This was communicated by the Kohima Municipal Council today.
The information comes after an unprecedented development when the municipal body was banned from depositing the garbage at the site in Dzucha Pekhro by ‘D’ Khel , Kohima village after receiving several complaints from residents in the area.
The council today issued six instructions for efficiency in the collection and disposal of garbage to be monitored by the Panchayats and Sanitation Committees.
The instructions stated that the ward vehicles should dump the garbage only in the designated site and not dump the rubbish on the roadside leading to the temporary dumping site. The ward vehicles should be covered well to prevent the contents from falling off the vehicle and littering the area it traverses. With the new site having many twists and turns, the council will install proper signage for the drivers to follow. Collection of firewood or any forest produce has been strictly prohibited. Any defaulter will be sternly dealt with, the KMC said. Henceforth, it will be made compulsory for every ward sanitary vehicle to report to the KMC toll gate near the BSF camp on every trip. Any complaint received against a ward sanitary vehicle will lead to the seizure of the vehicle by the KMC.
The ward concerned will be prevented from dumping its garbage at the designated site.
Ironically, the instructions inadvertently serve as possible pointers to why complaints emerged leading to a ban to dump garbage in the earlier site. Actions which possibly went unchecked and led to the recent crisis, when for almost a fortnight residents of the capital woke up to the dirty ugly sight of uncollected garbage.
Any change of location of the dumping site in future will be communicated. Meanwhile, for further queries the council has provided the following numbers: Neilhouphrelie Sr. SL KMC : 919402481869,
Khrielaphrezo SL KMC: 919856823989 and Keneilhousa SL KMC: 918014061729.
