DIMAPUR — A joint consultative meeting of civil society organisations representing the Zeliangrong community took place at Namdunlong Community Hall, Imphal on Saturday, addressing the current situation in the state of Manipur concerning the Zeliangrong people.

As per a joint press release, during the meeting, speakers unanimously condemned the frequent gunfights between NSCN (IM) and ZUF armed groups in Zeliangrong territory, the latest incident occurring at Lamdangmei village in Noney district, resulting in the death of two ZUF and one NSCN (IM) cadre.

Despite a ceasefire and ongoing peace talks since 1997 between NSCN (IM) and the Government of India, and the Cessation of Operation agreement with ZUF in 2022, the meeting asserted that the recurring violence in Zeliangrong areas is attributed to the Government of India. They urged the government to take responsibility for the situation, calling for necessary ex-gratia and compensatory benefits for the lives lost due to alleged mishandling and ineffectiveness.

The meeting also strongly urged all the armed groups to heed the voice of the people, respect the sentiments and interest of the people, and stop violence among Nagas if they really claim to represent the interest of the people. It urged a commitment to non-violent means for the betterment of the future.

As per the release, the meeting was attended by leaders of Zeliangrong Union, Zeliangrong Baudi, Rongmei Naga People’s Organisation, Rongmei Naga Council Manipur, Zeliangrong Youth Front, Rongmei Naga Student’s Organisation Manipur, Zeliangrong United Committee Manipur Valley, Kabui Mother’s Association, social workers and activists, intellectuals, former organisations leaders, and representatives and elders of villages.

The press release was issued with the consent of ZU (AMN), ZB (AMN), RNPO (AMN), ZYF, RNSOM, KAMA, and ZUCMV, it added.
