Zeliangrong Civil Organisations appeal to striking doctors in Manipur

The Zeliangrong Civil Organisations (ZCOs) have urged the medical doctors in Manipur who are on an indefinite strike, to consider the suffering of the common people and to abide in their chosen profession with professional ethics, responsibility and commitment in the service of humanity.

The ZCOs also appealed to the Government of Manipur to sit across the table with the agitating medical doctors and explore every possible ways and means to fulfill their demands considering the suffering of the common people.

 “Though the demands raised by the medical doctors seemed to be genuine and requires consideration by the Govt., it is also felt important to remember that human lives and their values are more precious and immeasurable than anything else which cannot be substituted or exchanged by anything in any manner,” stated a press release issued by the ZCOs on Wednesday.

The ZCOs including the Zeliangrong Baudi and Zeliangrong Youth Front stated that the indefinite strike imposed by the government doctors since February 12, has impacted the “economically distressed” people in the hill districts, especially in the absence of other alternative health care service centres in the hills districts.

“There are reports of even birth and death certificate not being processed and issued since the hospitals and its related administrative units have been closed due to the doctors’ indefinite strike in the hill districts,” the release stated.

The civil organisations also stated that delay in solving the issue may lead to public uproar against the government as well as the agitating medical doctors.

It may be mentioned that the indefinite strike of doctors affiliated with the All Manipur Health Services Doctor’s Association began on February 12. Among others, the agitating doctors are demanding time-scale promotions, allowances, and an increase in the retirement age.
