YRS department to skill 1050 individuals in three trades
KOHIMA — Anthony Ngullie, Secretary, Department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), on Monday underscored the importance of skill development in contributing to the local economy.
He was addressing the launch of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0 training for mobile phone hardware repair technicians, assistants in installation of computing and peripherals, and drone service technicians, held at the YouthNet, Billy Graham Road in Kohima.
Pointing out that in the era of technology, it is very difficult to survive without technological knowledge, he emphasised the importance of adapting to change. He highlighted that unemployment has become a stark reality, noting that despite a large number of students attending school, they are not assured of securing employment in the future.
Addressing the Naga people’s reliance on outsiders, which he stated is not beneficial for the state, he advised the trainees to take the training seriously, as it would ensure their survival in a changing environment. He expressed hope that the training provided by the department in collaboration with various agencies would effectively skill the youth.
Meanwhile, Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of YRS, stated that while the department had not focused on skill development previously, it has decided to undertake skilling for three trades this year, recognising that the Naga people are not pursuing these job opportunities.
The director noted that government jobs do not contribute to the economy in the same way that businesses and entrepreneurship do, as these latter sectors positively impact the local economy. He asserted the need for dedication and sincerity among the trainees in their efforts.
He informed that the training for the three trades is a pilot project, with the department training 1,050 people in these areas. Depending on the outcomes, they may continue to offer training in these trades or explore additional options.
Nuneseno Chase, Director of YouthNet, stated in her opening remarks that 350 individuals will be trained in each of the three trades, and training will also be expanded to other districts, such as Shamatore.
Speeches were also delivered by M Philip Patton, trainee in mobile phone hardware repair technician, and L Toshimeren Longkumer, trainee in drone service technician.
