Dimapur, Dec. 5 (EMN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, organised an exposure-cum-training programme on artificial insemination (AI) in pigs for rural youth of Phek district to ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, at Medziphema from November 30 to December 4. The programme was sponsored by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

An update from KVK Phek stated that a total of 20 educated youth from 12 villages in Phek district namely Zapami, Pfutseromi, Chetheba, Porba, Chesezu, Chozuba, Sakraba, Losami, Upper Khomi, Kutsapo, Yisisotha and Zavame participated in the programme.

It stated that the director of ICAR NRC on Mithun Dr. MH Khan, in his inaugural speech, has emphasised on the prospects of commercial pig farming in Nagaland. Besides, he also spoke on the significance of artificial insemination (AI) technology in bringing superior genetics to the herd at a potentially lower cost, minimising the expenses of keeping a breeding boar and also reducing the transmission of diseases.

During the training programme, Dr. Mahak Singh, animal reproduction and gynaecology scientist from ICAR-Nagaland, explained the basic techniques of artificial insemination in pigs, while Dr. Talimoa Mollier, research associate of mega seed project on pig, practically demonstrated the techniques in farm and field condition to the youth.

Presentations on various aspects of artificial insemination in pigs were delivered by resource persons namely Dr. Vikram R, animal reproduction and gynaecology scientist from ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema; and Dr. Ebibeni Ngullie, ACTO, KVK-Dimapur, during the training session.

It stated that the youths have also availed the opportunity to visit a scientific and modern pig farms of progressive farmers namely Achumo Ngullie and Seve Vadeo located at Seithekema C and Seithekema A respectively.

The team was led by Dr. Debojyoti Borkotoky, assistant chief technical officer (Animal Science) from KVK, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Porba in Phek district.
