DIMAPUR — The Political Science department of Yingli College in Longleng organised an outreach awareness programme on “Value of right to vote in the democracy” at Oushok village ground on March 23.

In his welcome address, the chairman of Oushok village council, Chailong Phom, thanked the college authority for organising the programme in the village. He stated that theme of the programme was relevant and would have impact on the village people.

He also suggested the students to work hard and increase the level of knowledge to serve the Phom community, stated a DIPR report.

Speaking at the programme, the college vice principal, Dr. B Henshet Phom, thanked the village council members for allowing them to use the public ground for the programme. He informed that Yingli College secured NAAC B+ grade due to many such co-curricular activities organised in and around the nearby villages in the district.

Despite prevalence of some loopholes in democracy, he stated that it is the best form of government at present. He cited examples of Japan where education played an important role to grow its economy. Further he suggested the eligible voters to be vigilant and know the value of right to vote.

Dr. Mahabir Jha, head of Political Science, briefed on the value and benefit of the outreach programme saying that it aims to sensitise students on their role in the community, state and nation building.

“This is a kind of exchange programme which involves social planning, awareness about rights and duties, health support and several social welfare projects. The value of right to vote in the democracy is a kind of awareness programme which helps to sensitise the people about their political rights and duties,” Dr. Jha said.

He stated that everyone must exercise their franchise to elect the right and honest person to lead them. He further advised all the students to respect each other, create good educational environment in the college and ready to prepare themselves for community service.

The students of forth semester presented a song on the occasion.

The programme was chaired by Lemei L Phom, student of 6th semester, and concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Chingau Phom.
