DIMAPUR — The state-owned Likimro Hydro Electric Power Project (LHEP), which has the capacity to generate 24 megawatts (MW) of power, has been shut down since the indefinite agitation called by the Yimkhiung Akheru Arihako (YAA) to protest the shortage of teachers, started on February 2.

An update from YAA informed that its officials, along with volunteers from Pungro Area College Students’ Union (PACSU) and Pungro Town Students’ Union (PTSU) and youths of Pungro town ensured that the power plant, which is under Pungro sub-division, remained shut on Day 2 (Saturday) of the protest.

It added that Salomi Village Students’ Union (SVSU), PACSU and PTSU will keep a check of its closure as the agitation enters Day 3 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the agitation was successfully implemented in all the administrative headquarters — Shamator District, Pungro (ADC) and Chessore (SDO) – on Saturday, said a press release, adding that the protest will continue till their demand for deployment of adequate number of teachers in government schools under its jurisdiction is fulfilled.
