World Environment Day observed in Manipur

Imphal, June 5 (EMN): The World Environment Day was observed across the state on Friday by carrying out tree plantation drive.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh led ministers and officers participated in tree plantation drive, organised by the directorate of Environment, government of Manipur at Samadhi of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, Bir Tikendrajit Park and Rani Gaidinliu Park in Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that natural disasters, global warming, and climate change are the consequences to the destruction of nature.

Stating the importance of preserving forest and wildlife, Singh stated that ‘we must take necessary measures to save earth’. He said that the government has initiated Green Manipur Mission so as to conserve and preserve the forest of the state.

Mass plantation drives are being taken up in various parts of the state, he added. He appealed to the people of the state to accomplish the mission.

On the Covid-19 pandemic, Singh cautioned the people that the disease could spread anywhere and infect anyone if one do not take precautionary measures and obey the advisories, guidelines and protocols issued by the WHO, Health ministry and medical experts.

Stating that more than 35,000 natives have returned to the state from different parts of the country, Singh said the state government has been taken up all precautionary and preventive measures to control the spread of Covid-19.

He appreciated the efforts of frontline workers, CSOs, volunteers in the fight against Covid-19.

Minister for Forest and Environment, Awangbow Newmai, minister for CAD&PD Karam Shyam, Deputy Speaker K Robindro, chairman of LDA L Susindro, chairman of Manipur Building and Construction Workers’ Welfare Board H Dingo, advisor to CM K Leishiyo, MLA of Yaiskul AC, Th Satyabrata Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) MH Khan and others attended the function.

Forest department along with Tamenglong Rainforest Club, 44 Assam Rifles, Police, and district council participated in the tree plantation drive at Gaidai Hill range of the district.
