World Environment Day observed across state

Dimapur, June 6 (EMN): Various organisations have observed the World Environment Day on June 5 on the theme ‘Beat the plastics pollution.’ The day was marked by organising various event such as undertaking cleanliness drive, tree plantation and other competitions. [caption id="attachment_187669" align="alignnone" width="550"] Officials of the Fisheries department and members of the Anglers’ Association of Nagaland cleaning a locality as part of their observing World Environment Day, on June 5.[/caption] KVSU: Kohima Village Students’ Union (KVSU), in partnership with the department of science and technology, has observed the World Environment Day on June 5 by distributing eco-friendly, biodegradable trash bags to all the shops and government schools within its the jurisdiction. The union had undertaken the initiative in order to create awareness and educating its citizens about the hazardous effects of plastics. KVSU president, Khrietuo Pienyü, stated that the union has taken the initiative to educate and create awareness among fellow Nagas to become smarter and more responsible citizen in using plastic in their daily lives. [caption id="attachment_187670" align="alignnone" width="550"] Students participating in the drawing competition that was organised by the Assam Rifles on the occasion of World Environment Day in Wokha.[/caption] 14 NAP (IR): To commemorate the World Environment Day, personnel of the 14th NAP (IR) battalion, Kiphire, undertook a plantation drive on June 5. The plantation drive was led by its deputy commandant, Limaonen. A total of 2000 tree saplings were planted consisting of 13 different species of trees. Around 200 personnel of the unit participated in the plantation drive. [caption id="attachment_187671" align="alignnone" width="550"] Plastic waste being collected by residents of Chumoukedima town in Dimapur on World Environment Day.[/caption] AAN: Anglers’ Association Nagaland and department of fisheries have jointly observed the World Environment Day on the theme “Beat the plastics pollution” on June 5 at fisheries department complex, Nagarjan, Dimapur. Kevisa Kense, director of fisheries, and AAN president led the campaign programme. The main highlights of the programme included banner campaign, tree plantation and cleanness drive. Ungma youth: With the rest of the world, the youth ministry of Ungma Baptist Church celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 by cleaning the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, and its adjacent area which was littered more than usual during the bye election. The cleanliness drive was led by Imtitoshi Longkumer, youth director of Ungma Baptist Arogo. [caption id="attachment_187672" align="alignnone" width="550"] Martin Smith, a guest lecturer from Australia, along with the members of St. Xavier College of Jalukie in Peren district, during a programme marking World Environment Day, on June 5.[/caption] Phek town students: Phek Town Chakhesang Students’ Union (PTCSU) has observed World Environment Day by organising a plantation drive in and around Phek town. Speaking on the occasion, the union president, Vechihu Khamo, has highlighted on the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. He also challenged each students not only be aware of various environmental issues and the consequences of their actions on the environment but also make a firm stand to develop a lifestyle to conserve the environment. More than 200 trees were planted. NU Lumami: Nagaland University, Lumami Campus, observed the World Environment Day by undertaking tree plantations drive and mass social work in and around the campus. During a short programme, short speeches were delivered by Prof. AK Singh, Vice Chancellor In-charge; Prof. NS Jamir, Registrar In-charge; and Prof. SK Chaturvedi, Dean, Research, Development and Consultancy. The programme ended with a vote of thanks from the chairperson calling upon everyone to involve themselves in making a better environment. Around 200 trees were planted on the occasion. The saplings were donated by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung. SDAO Chozuba: Sub-divisional agricultural officer Chozuba (SDAO) has observed the World Environment Day on June 5 by organising a talk delivered by agriculture inspector, Mhalevilie Thorie. In his speech, Thorie has focused on issues of global warming that has taken toll in our daily life due to random destruction of forest area. He impressed upon on the importance of each individual’s contribution towards restoring and preserving it for the future generation. To mark the occasion, the officers also planted trees at the office premises. Zunheboto government college: Zunheboto Government College has observed the World Environment Day, jointly organised by NSS unit and department of environmental science on June 5. Speaking on the occasion, the college’s principal, T Allong Tzudir, has expounded on the important role of trees in supplying oxygen for human survival. He has encouraged the gathering to love the trees, take ownership and initiate in afforestation. The principal also expressed gratitude to Vikugha Kiba, DPO land resources, for contributing tree sapplings. Atleast 250 tree saplings of various kinds were planted around college compound with the participation of all the faculties and the students. St. Xavier College Jalukie: St. Xavier College Jalukie has observed the World Environment Day by collecting waste plastic and planting tree-saplings besides having a general cleaning of the environment. The college was privileged to have Martin Smith, guest lecturer from Australia, who took the lead in the programme. The programme was marked with inspiring messages delivered by NSS president and the college’s principal. Special song was presented NCC cadets. Tourism Dept: Officers and staff of the tourism department observed the World Environment Day by planting trees and cleaning the Heritage Complex at Kisama. The department has acknowledged the teachers and students of Class V and VI from St. Paul School, Phesama village, for joining with the department in cleaning the litters and plastic waste in and around Kisama, Naga Heritage village. CTC: Chumukedima Town Council (CTC) spearheaded by EAC Thejavizo Nakhro along with the NGOs, stakeholders, schools and student bodies observed the World Environment Day by planting 500 saplings of pencil pines trees in and around the new DC’s office complex. After the plantation drive, a formal programme was held in which prizes were given away to the winners of various competitions such as plastic waste collection and logo competition. Fazl Ali College: Commemorating the World Environment Day, NSS unit of Fazl Ali College along with NCC Swachh Bharat and the department of geography has organised a cleanliness drive in the college campus. Basing on the theme “Beat plastic pollution,” the event was successfully conducted with the participation from around hundred students and faculty members. Assam Rifles: Assam Rifles has observed the World Environment Day at 81 places across Nagaland. To marked the day, large scale plantation drives were carried out wherein 16000 saplings were planted. Several other activities included seven ‘Go Green marches,’ three ‘Runs for Fun,’ 27 ‘Awareness lectures on Global Warming,’ 11 ‘Painting competitions’ and an innovative lecture on modern farming technology. School students, teachers and locals from all walks of life joined hands with Assam Rifles in large numbers.
