Workshop on rice seed exchange underway

A two-day “Experience Sharing Workshop on Rice Seed Exchange and Rice Cultivar Development in Nagaland” began at Kohima today. The workshop which is being organised by Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
The participants of the workshop are farmers who have been actively participating in the Rice Seed Exchange programme and Farmer Led Rice Cultivar Development programme of the NEPED-GIZ collaboration on Climate Change Adaptation-North East Region (CCA-NER).
Speaking at the inaugural function of the workshop, Menukhol John, Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland and Team Leader NEPED, encouraged the farmers to keep up the good work which have been initiated, and hoped that the partnership would work closer and achieve more in future.
Dr. Uwe Scholz, Project Director, CCA-NER (GIZ), in his address to the gathering, said activities under the project can be scaled up where more villages are included. He also expressed hope of better things to come in the coming days.
The workshop is being organised to share learnings and experiences of the farmers and also discuss on how to improve and mainstream the activities into Government Departments and Institutions. Inclusive planning for the next year will be another key outcome of this workshop. Besides NEPED and GIZ, resource persons facilitating the discussions will include experts from School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development, Nagaland University, Medziphema and KVK Dimapur.
The workshop is being participated by 14 farmers from Langkok village, Kiphire District; Sakraba village, Phek District; Tsiesema Basa village, Kohima District; Rüzaphema village, Dimapur District; and Yuching village, Mon District, and also four officers from the Agriculture Department and State Agriculture Research Station (SARS), Yisemyong, Mokokchung, who have been actively monitoring the activities of the farmers.
