creating SEL teachers’ handbook in Kohima on Friday.
- DIMAPUR — Aimed
at co-developing the Morung Social Emotional Learning (SEL) teachers’ handbook
for Nagaland, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT)
and Dream a Dream, a Bengaluru-based non-profit organisation working in the
field of life skills and education reform, have jointly organised a two-day
workshop on April 24 and 25 at SCERT conference hall in Kohima.
- An update from SCERT stated that the workshop brought
together key stakeholders from the Directorate of School Education (DoSE),
State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland Board of
School Education (NBSE), DIET and the Dream a Dream team. The workshop was
aimed at collectively designing a contextual SEL resource for teachers of
Classes 3 to 12.
- The handbook was envisioned to support teachers in
addressing the emotional and social needs of students, especially in the face
of multiple adversities such as socio-economic challenges, conflict and limited
infrastructure.

- The workshop was inaugurated by Kevirale-u Kerhuo, director
of SCERT, wherein she emphasised the urgent need to integrate social emotional
learning into the education system to create safer, more inclusive and
emotionally responsive classrooms. She highlighted the significance of teacher
capacity building in making the vision a reality.
- Facilitated by Revanna and Venu from Dream a Dream, the
workshop was designed as an experiential and collaborative space.
- It stated that participants engaged in a range of reflective
and interactive sessions that included understanding the findings from a recent
need assessment on student well-being in Nagaland, exploring approaches to
curriculum design and envisioning the structure and intent of the Morung SEL
handbook.
- Key objectives of the workshop included gaining a deeper
understanding of social emotional learning in the context of Nagaland;
discussing the impact of childhood adversity on learning and well-being;
co-developing the framework for a culturally relevant and practical SEL
handbook and building alignment among key departments and institutions involved
in education.
- It mentioned that the workshop represented a significant
step toward embedding social emotional learning within the education system of
Nagaland.
- As the process of developing the handbook moves forward, it
added that the continued collaboration among SCERT, DoSE, NBSE, DIET and Dream
a Dream would be essential in ensuring that the final resource is both
contextually grounded and practically applicable.
- The Morung SEL teachers’ handbook aims to equip educators
across the state with tools and approaches that foster student resilience,
emotional intelligence and holistic growth — enabling every child in Nagaland
to not just learn, but to thrive.
