Dimapur, May 3 (EMN): As part of social and humanitarian community service, a social action committee formed from various self help groups (SHG) and village-level organisations (VLO) under NSRLM-RD Bhandari block in Wokha district undertook campaign to distribute essential items to vulnerable groups in
villages.

According to a press release from NSRLM Bhandari block, the committee initiated the campaign with contribution from their earnings and personal savings. It stated that the committee had provided face masks, hand sanitisers as well as essential food items such as rice, sugar, eggs, salt, mustard oil, milk powder, wheat flour, dal, fish, pork meat, lamb meat, dettol soaps to over 150 households till date.

The committee engaged in the distribution of the essential items comprised of AWWs, ASHA workers, VLO presidents, VF-cum-MBK, and SHGs members.
Besides rendering yeoman services, the committee members are engaged in disseminating information in the form of IEC campaign on Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides, the committee has installed indigenous bamboo poles for hand-wash, provided firewood, fresh fruits and vegetables to police personnel on duty in the villages. The members have also produced homemade face-masks, set up community based quarantine centres, demonstrated on hand-wash. Clean and hygienic habits were also inculcated in places of worship as well as living spaces by the SHGs, the release stated.

The committee has also assisted the village council to disseminate advisory issued by the state Home department urging the public to refrain from hunting or consume any wild meat especially wild boar, civets etc because of the strong possibility of the virus being present in them. It added that the committees has been instrumental in the preservation and conservation of wildlife and environment.

The release also stated that procurement of agricultural products is currently underway to facilitate sustainable market linkage for the affected farming communities.

Area coordinator of NSRLM Bhandari block, Chichanthung Shitiri, under whose guidance the committee was formed, stated that the service rendered was voluntary and without any obligation or compulsion but for the betterment of mankind. He has commended their service for improving the quality of family life, neighbourhood, local community and the society at large.
