Wokha observes Iodine Deficiency Day

Dimapur, Oct. 23 (EMN):
Wokha district observed the Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day in the conference hall of the chief medical officer (CMO), Wokha, on October 23 on the theme ‘Consume iodised salt, protect mental and physical health.’

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. CW Tungoe, CMO Wokha, stressed on the importance of iodine intake in their diet for proper function of the human body. He stated that deficiency of iodine leads to mental retardation, stunted growth, speech and hearing impairment, foetal death and goitre.

Demonstration of salt analysis was done by block ASHA coordinators Zuchanbeni and Mhonlumi. Salt test kits were later distributed to the participants.

Dr. N Mhonchan Kithan, DNO, NIDDCP, briefed the participants on various activities carried out by the department to create awareness in schools, restaurants, daily markets, go downs, villages, churches etc.

The programme was chaired by block ASHA co-ordinator, Supenro.
