Wokha district observes World Hepatitis Day

DIMAPUR — Health department of Wokha division observed World Hepatitis Day at the conference hall of the chief medical officer (CMO) in Wokha town on the theme ‘It’s time for action.’

The theme speaker and CMO of Wokha, Dr. Zubenthung Kikon, emphasised on the importance of creating awareness on Hepatitis among the public and also explained on the transmission and causes of the disease.

Dr. Kikon also informed that testing and vaccination are two key factors in order to prevent the spread of hepatitis, stated an update from the CMO.

A powerppoint presentation on hepatitis was made by Dr. Chumdemo Kikon, medical doctor at District Hospital, Wokha, and gave a brief introduction on hepatitis disease and its effect on the liver.

He mentioned that among the types of hepatitis, A and E are acute hepatitis, which could be transmitted through food and water while hepatitis B and C cause liver cancer. He added that the disease could also be transmitted during blood transmission or organ transmission, unsafe injection and during surgical procedure.

He further urged the pregnant women to get tested for hepatitis B and informed that the government is making effort to prevent the disease by providing free vaccine for hepatitis B to a new born child within 24 hours of delivery in government health facilities.

Scenario of hepatitis cases in the district was presented by C Lideno Tungoe, peer support educator of NVHCP.

The programme was chaired by Lichumo Odyuo, DPO, DAPCU, Wokha, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Mhonbeni Ezung, DPM (NHM).
