Wokha district hosts half-marathon race to promote voter education

DIMAPUR — As part of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities and to create awareness on election, the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) in Wokha organised a half-marathon race for the students of Government Higher Secondary School on Tuesday.

A DIRP report stated that the half-marathon race was flagged off by the SDO (Civil) and nodal officer of SVEEP, Nuhuta Tunyi, at traffic police point in Wokha town and culminated at GHSS, Wokha.

Speaking about the event, Tunyi emphasised on the importance of voting and urged the students to spread the message that voting is a fundamental right for every citizen. He highlighted that the marathon participants were prospective voters representing the future electorate and stressed the significance of preparing them to exercise their voting rights when they come of age.

Additionally, students were encouraged to raise awareness among their peers, elders and community members to ensure broader participation in the electoral process.

The half-marathon was organised in separate categories for men and women. In the women’s category, Hangkai Konyak won the first prize, while Lothungbeni Kikon and Zuchanbeni Humtsoe won the second and third prizes respectively.

In the men’s category, Puchong won the first prize, while Merichan Ngullie and Y Renjanthung Kikon won the second and third prizes respectively.

The programme was aimed at engaging the community and fostering a culture of civic responsibility and active participation in the democratic process.

Cash prizes with certificates were awarded to the winners and certificates of participation was also presented to all participants.

Meanwhile, the district administration and the Election department of Wokha division have expressed gratitude to the Government Higher Secondary School for their valuable support and collaboration in conducting the event successfully.
