Dimapur, June 29 (EMN): In view of the Nagaland government banning single-use plastics in the state and the need to create awareness among the public, the Block Task Force of Wokha district under the chairmanship of Dr. Manazir Jeelani, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, conducted a seminar on plastic pollution for shopkeepers in Doyang area on June 26 in Thillong village community hall.

A press release issued by ADC Sanis said that Doyang area lies along the Wokha-Merapani road which is the main transit point for travellers and commercial. It is also a tourist hotspot during the Amur Falcon roosting season.

During the seminar, Seyiekhrietuo Solo, EAC Aitepyong, made a power point presentation on the ill-effects of plastic, its alternatives and the need to go back to environment-friendly indigenous practice of packaging. The participants were urged to adopt and help propagate important habits like carrying one’s own shopping bags and water bottles, planting trees and practising waste segregation.

A short documentary on plastic by Dreamz Unlimited and produced by the department of IPR was screened at the programme chaired by Sanis. About 40 participants, which included shopkeepers, GBs, DBs and village functionaries, were informed that ban on single-use plastic items, packaged drinking water and styrofoam products would come into force in Sanis HQ jurisdiction on July 15 and fine would be imposed on the defaulters.

Reusable water bottles and government-issued cloth bags were distributed to all the participants. To demonstrate alternative methods, the programme banner was made with chart papers and paper printouts and refreshments were served on banana leaf and paper cups.
