Dimapur, May 14 (EMN):
As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission the Wokha Town Council (WTC) organized a seminar on plastic waste management, on May 14 at the youth centre of the Don Bosco higher secondary school in Wokha.

The government’s publicity agency, the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) issued updates on Tuesday informing about the programme.

The additional deputy commissioner of the council Andrew C Imti gave the keynote address to the event. The official highlighted the various initiatives like inter-school essay and painting competitions, besides poster campaigns that were being undertaken to educate educational institutions across Wokha town.

Imti said plastic is a useful material and one that is used everywhere.

‘But if we do not make proper use of it, it causes environmental hazards,’ he said. The officer urged the students to educate the public to discourage or maximize the use of plastic. He informed that the Wokha Town Council will shortly be issuing a notice banning the use of plastic bags and other single-use plastic materials.

Thungdemo Kyong, a leader of a nongovernmental organisation in Wokha called Team Metamorphosis, giving a presentation on plastic waste management. Kyong said that using single plastic materials can be convenient but it comes at a huge environmental cost to the planet and the lives of humans.

Further, Kyong emphasized on proper management of plastic to prevent further damage of the environment and the lives of humans ‘as it has already inflicted enough harm to us due to mismanagement of plastic.’

Extra assistant commissioner of Wokha, Toking Yimchunger, who also spoke on the occasion, urged the students to be the leaders. The officer told them that they can be the agents of change who will ensure success of the campaign. He urged them to spread awareness to making the planet cleaner and green, the updates stated.

During the programme the results of various competitions were announced, the IPR stated. The additional deputy commissioner gave away the prizes to the winners. Rendeno of Libemo Memorial School; Jeniren of Isaiah Ability School; and Nzanrhoni of Don Bosco higher secondary school were adjudged the first, second, and third prize winners, in that order, in the painting competition. Their surnames were not given in the IPR’s update.

In the essay competition Zujanbeni of Isaiah Ability School; Christina of LMS, Elisen of Don Bosco higher secondary school and Mhachan of LMS were adjudged the first, second, and third prize winners, in that order. Their surnames were not given in the IPR’s update.

The government higher secondary school of Wokha and Libemo Memorial School were awarded with the cleanest school award, the IPR stated.

Cloth shopping bags made by Eastern Self Help Group were distributed to various schools as sample pieces. The bags were to be used as alternative to shopping bags, the IPR stated. The schools were encouraged to produce more such bags in the future.
