William Koso laid to rest

  • Funeral service of N William Koso at his residence in Kohima on Wednesday.

  • KOHIMA — N William Koso, a senior football coach in Nagaland, was laid to rest in Kohima on Wednesday after a last funeral service at his residence in Lerie colony. Koso is survived by his wife and three sons.

  • The 42-year-old succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after he was reportedly hit by a vehicle on NH-29 in Chümoukedima in the wee hours.

  • During the funeral service, condolence messages were delivered by Mao Baptist Church (MBC) Kohima, MBC Chowainu, Mao Union Kohima, Mao Officer’s Union. Short speeches were also delivered by representatives from Nagaland Football Association, Kohima District Football Association, department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland Football Coaches Association, Kohima Town Club, Lerie Youth Organisation, Mao Hoho Nagaland, Lerie panchayat, and his colleagues.

  • Robert Romawia Royte, MLA from Mizoram and the owner of I League Club Aizawl FC, also spoke at the funeral. Condolence messages from Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Chairman of IDAN Abu Metha, Nagaland Super League, Mao Football Association were also read out during the service.

  • Vibinuo, wife of late William Koso, also spoke at the funeral.

  • Neli Koso, father of William, also shared about his son’s love for football from a young age. He also expressed gratitude to everyone who helped the family during their hard time.

  • Career in football

  • Following his 12th standard, William’s passion for football led him to join the Naga Boys Club. His talent and dedication earned him a spot at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Dimapur.

  • His club career spanned stints with ASEB (Guwahati), Nine Bullets (Tripura), Yaiskhul (Manipur), and Churchill Brothers (Goa).

  • He also represented Nagaland in the Santosh Trophy multiple times, distinguishing himself as a skilled goalkeeper.

  • His coaching career commenced with Lifesports Football Club, Nagaland, and then at Kohima Komets.

  • His coaching credentials include completing his NIS from Mumbai, AFC Futsal license, AIFF goalkeeping grade. He was the first from Nagaland to obtain AFC A- license.

  • He was also assistant coach at Aizawl FC, Mizoram, and the goalkeeping coach of Royal Wahingdoh FC, Meghalaya.

  • He served as an Officer on Special Duty at department of Youth Resource and Sports, general secretary of the Kohima District Football Association, and also as the High Performance Manager of Khelo India until his demise.
