[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hile the special assembly session on 5th Feb. and the subsequent floor test which gave unprecedented majority to T.R Zeliang, our honourable Chief Minister, seems to have somewhat settled the political impasse that have engulfed our state for quite some time, one cannot be too certain as to what will unfold next in this emergent relentless bedlam in the coming days.
Considering the recent cutthroat political drama, the sudden seemingly peaceful quietness and silence is rather too disquieting for comfort. The dust and din seems to have settled but the suspense is too conspicuous, one is led to wonder if the present uneasy silence is a prelude to that deceptive “calmness before a hurricane” or can we really cherish the positive attachment that “it’s darkest before the dawn”.
Given the level of political bankruptcy and the extent of degraded disposition that some of our respected leaders have exhibited, one cannot help to be anything but a pessimist. It’s also a wonder what undercurrents might be insidiously flowing within the dark confines of the opposing camps. Consequently, it is seriously doubtful if we can really expect or hope for any better sense of governance in the days to come or are we heading for another showdown of cutthroat politics? Will we be able to withstand such a scenario in the near future again, which seems fearfully imminent, taking into account the kind of cutthroat politics that our elected representatives are engaging today. Notwithstanding the self-righteous profession of both sides; it’s really disheartening to see how they could callously neglect the aspirations and hopes bestowed on them by the peoples.
In view of the above, I seriously wonder if we can really expect to cherish any hopes and dreams of brighter days in the near future without some outside/divine intervention for our society. No matter what our expectations or dreams/aspirations maybe, I believe it is the social structure in which we live in today and the general character of the populace particularly the leaders that shapes and determines our destiny.
At the end of the day, those concerned leaders and responsible members should know that you have most deplorably exposed your individual persona and intents by partaking in such Machiavellian squabble and enacting some self imposed confinements in the so called snobbish camps which is quite obvious and cannot escape the judgment of the public. Besides, there is a time for everything and a rule of law. But above all that is the conscience in us that dictates our every decisions and actions. Therefore even if we somehow manage to evade the judgment of law and mankind through whatever intellect or shrewdness to realize our selfish desires and motives, we can never escape the unrelenting and perpetual scrutiny of our conscience which will be the ultimate judgment for everybody.
