DIMAPUR — The Kulolau Lazami Küqhakulu (Western Lazami Union) is organising a free academic book distribution programme for Lazami college students from May 21 to the 24th at CT Square, Chümoukedima.
The academic books were donated by Vitoshe Swunetho with an aim to support students, especially those from economically weaker sections of society.
The initiative seeks to encourage the habit of reading physical books among college students and provide them with better academic resources.
Speaking to media persons, Western Lazami Union president KA Jacob said that Swunetho conceived the idea of donating books for students after observing the consistent academic success of Government High School, Lazami.
According to the union, GHS Lazami was adjudged the best performing government school in the HSLC Examination 2026 after securing a 100 percent pass percentage and recording the best overall performance among government schools under Pughoboto subdivision. The school also achieved a 100 percent pass percentage for three consecutive years.

He stated that while physical books are compulsory up to higher secondary level, college students often shift towards digital platforms and gradually lose the habit of reading books.
Swunetho therefore decided to donate books so that students could continue cultivating reading habits, improve their comprehension skills and develop stronger vocabulary.
Jacob said reading books helps students gain better understanding and exposes them to a richer and more varied vocabulary compared to the limited content often found on digital platforms.
He informed that the first phase of distribution is exclusively for Lazami students studying in various colleges. Students unable to collect the books personally have been requested to send representatives or provide lists so the books can be delivered through designated persons, including students residing in Kohima, Zunheboto and other districts.
According to the union, the estimated value of the donated books ranges between INR 3-4 lakh.
He also mentioned that the books are mainly focused on Arts and Commerce subjects, as Science education largely depends on practical and laboratory-based studies, making procurement of science-related materials more difficult.
The distribution programme will continue till Sunday.
The union further stated that while the initiative is highly beneficial, conducting such programmes annually may be challenging as the Western Lazami Union is a non-profit organisation with limited financial resources.
However, he added that the organisation would explore possibilities to continue similar initiatives in the future.
Highlighting the significance of the contribution, the organisers stated that the donation of around one thousand books would greatly assist underprivileged students and strengthen educational support within the community.
