KOHIMA — Despite facing impeachment by the GPRN/NSCN, N Kitovi Zhimomi continues to be the Convenor of the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC-NNPG). However, recent developments have indicated that the WC-NNPG is planning to seek broader input and engage in consultations before making a final decision on his position.

Zhimomi, who was the Ato Kilonser of the GPRN/NSCN, which is one among the seven groups that make up the NNPG, was impeached last month following allegations of ‘incompetence and financial instability’, among others. Subsequently, Alezo Venuh, special envoy to the collective leadership and coordinator of WC-NNPG, was elected as the new Ato Kilonser.

While the WC-NNPG did not find any wrongdoings or abuse of power by the current convenor, reliable sources told Eastern Mirror on Thursday that wider consultations with apex civil bodies and opinions of the government of India are required before taking any further decisions.

The decision as to whether Zhimomi will continue as the convener of WC-NNPG or a new person will be elected needs some time. It requires thorough consultations and decisions cannot be made immediately. The final decision for the next convenor will be taken after consulting the apex civil bodies, senior leaders and the government of India’s stance on the matter, sources said.

Sources close to the WC-NNPG also revealed that during the co-convenors’ meeting in Dimapur last week, confidence in Zhimomi’s leadership was expressed, and that there was no evidence of misconduct or abuse of power against him as convenor.

While the impeachment may have cast a shadow on his name, the WC-NNPG emphasised that they are ‘not responsible’ for the actions of the GPRN/NSCN and had initially considered retaining him as Convenor.

However, questions arose regarding the GPRN/NSCN’s stance on his leadership during discussions with the Khehoyi Designated Camp.

If the GPRN/NSCN insists on not remaining under Kitovi’s leadership, the appointment of a new Convenor may become necessary. Ultimately, the final decision will be based on consultations and a comprehensive assessment of the situation, sources said.

For now, Zhimomi will continue to serve as the Convenor of the WC-NNPG while the consultations take place, a process expected to require time and careful deliberation.

It may be recalled that last week, the WC-NNPG reassured the public that they remain stable, united and committed to their goals despite the internal challenges posed by the impeachment.

“The purpose and objective of the WC-NNPG is higher and above the individual or organisational interest that we cannot allow minor differences within affiliated organisations to undermine our core values and goal,” it stated in a press release issued last week.

It may be noted that the WC-NNPG entered into an ‘Agreed Position’ with the Government of India on November 17, 2017.
