WASU flags government negligence in Wakching New Model College
DIMAPUR — The Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) has sought an explanation from Nagaland government on the issue of shortage of teachers at Wakching New Model College, Mon.
In a press release issued on Monday, the union expressed opposition to the government’s move to appoint “only three lecturer posts” at the college.
“Wakching New Model College was launched and inaugurated on 3rd February 2019, at the Mon DC conference hall. However, till today, our state government and the concerned department have failed to provide sufficient teaching and non-teaching staff or the necessary materials to the college for the past four years.
“Many students from poor backgrounds, who cannot afford to study elsewhere, have chosen to pursue their interests in honours subjects at this only science college in Mon District. The state government has shown a lack of respect and has not provided equal opportunities for these students”, it stated.
Also, the union informed that not even a single Honours course/subject in Science stream has been introduced due to shortage of teaching faculty while accommodation of students has also reduced this academic year.

It therefore maintained that “all incumbent lecturers and Assistant Professors” should be appointed in accordance with Department or Government notification regarding the creation of posts for Wakching New Model College; all non-teaching staff should be appointed in accordance with the post-creation notification; and to benefit the students, specific honours subjects should be provided and allowed.
Further, the union questioned the government’s delay or failure to appoint sufficient lecturers at the college.
“WASU asks the state government and the Department of Higher Education to look into the matter immediately for the welfare of students and the smooth functioning of classes and urges that complete subject lecturers be appointed at this only science college in the Mon district”, it stated.
