DIMAPUR — Former candidate of LJP (RV) from Satakha, Zheito Chophy, has expressed serious concern over road accidents and natural disasters along the Dimapur-Kohima highway, which has become a grim reality for the people of Nagaland.
He stated that the vital stretch, serving as the primary link between two major cities, has not only been a route of opportunity but also one of danger. With treacherous terrain, inadequate infrastructure and increasing traffic, he said the highway has now become synonymous with tragic incidents that could have been prevented.
Chophy stated that the tragic landslide on the Dimapur-Kohima stretch of NH-29, which claimed six lives stands as a stark reminder of the fragility of life. He added that another rock fall earlier this year which took two more lives has raised the toll to eight in 2024 alone.
He, therefore, stated that such tragedies must serve as a wake-up call to the leaders and authorities, saying ‘Road safety should not be an afterthought but a top priority. He stated that an urgent need for an alternative safer route such as a well-constructed four lane highway connecting Kohima to Dimapur cannot be overstated.
Considering the geographical vulnerability of the current route, he stated that the proposal of developing an alternative road from Niuland to Ghotovi, Zadima and 10th Mile could help alleviate traffic congestion in hazard-prone areas.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, he stated it is essential to implement rigorous safety measures and regular maintenance to ensure that roads can withstand natural challenges. He added that enhanced early warning systems, timely clearance of landslides and improved traffic management could further mitigate risks.
He called upon the Naga politicians and policy makers to take immediate and decisive action to address those concerns. He further stated that it should be the collective responsibility to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated and that every effort is made to protect human lives.
